Michael Sheard was born Michael Lawson Perkins in Aberdeen. His father, Donald Marriot Perkins, was a church minister. Sheard developed an interest in acting while still young, and after national service in the Royal Air Force, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
